University Health Services (UHS) is a fully accredited ambulatory healthcare center open to students, faculty, staff, and their families. Services include medical and mental health care, eye care, on-site laboratory, radiology and pharmacy departments, health promotion services, and more. Visit www.umass.edu/uhs, for information.

Routine medical care is by appointment. Walk-in care for minor injuries and illnesses is available daily, 8 a.m. to midnight; telephone triage and consultation services are always available. Mental health care is by appointment, with emergency on-call services accessible 24 hours a day.

For all students:

  • Massachusetts law requires college students to have comprehensive primary health insurance coverage. Students taking five or more credits are automatically enrolled in the university's Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and charged on the semester tuition bill. Students may be eligible to waive the SHIP, depending on their student status and insurance coverage. Waivers must be completed by the end of the Add/Drop period. Learn more at www.umass.edu/uhs/insurance/ship.
  • Patients insured by a health maintenance organization or point-of-service plan which requires a referral from their primary care provider (PCP) must obtain a referral for care at UHS. When scheduling an appointment, you will be reminded of this requirement and asked to provide your PCP's name and address. To avoid the need to obtain a referral, contact your insurance company and switch your PCP designation to a UHS provider.

For first-year students:

  • All first-year students are required by law to have certain immunizations before coming to school. Documentation must be submitted to UHS' New Student Immunization Program before the end of the Add/Drop period to avoid a registration hold. Get the required form and information at  www.umass.edu/uhs/immunizations. Follow all instructions carefully.
  • All first-year students must  must successfully complete MyStudentBody, an online alcohol and other drug education course, by the stated deadline to avoid a registration hold. Go to www.umass.edu/uhs/cadap/msb to download course instructions; follow them carefully to receive credit for the course.
