Library System
Director of Libraries: Jay Schafer (413) 545-0284 The Library System provides access to an extensive collection of electronic services and resources, which are available 24 hours a day at www.library.umass.edu. The campus libraries include the W.E.B. Du Bois Library (and the Learning Commons) in the center of campus, the Science and Engineering Library in Lederle, the Image Collection Library in Bartlett, and the Music Reserve Lab in the Fine Arts Center. Library staff in each location provide research assistance to users. The libraries offer students individual and group study spaces, computers, and access to well over 8 million items, ranging from books, magazines, and journals to newspapers, maps, musical recordings, Special Collections manuscripts, government documents, and digital media, much of it available to students from virtually anywhere. More than two million items in the libraries are in microformat. A current UCard, the university photographic I.D., serves as a library card at the university and at the other members of the Five College consortium. The Library provides access to over 80,000 e-journals, more than 200 databases, and to material in the nearby four colleges. Students can find books, journals, articles, media, maps and more in libraries and collections locally and around the world through the search box on the Library's home page. The Library provides access to digital images of many of its collections in the Department of Special Collections and University Archives through Credo, an online repository: http://credo.library.umass.edu. The Learning Commons brings together library, technology, and other campus services in an environment that fosters informal, collaborative work and social interaction. In addition to personal computers, group study rooms, flexible work stations, laptop computer borrowing, and comfortable furniture, the Learning Commons offers academic advising, technical support, peer tutoring, writing assistance, reference and research assistance, assistive technologies for people with disabilities, information desks, and a café. Reference librarians offer instruction in using electronic resources and developing research strategies through class sessions, workshops, and individual appointments. The Libraries designate librarians to academic departments and schools on campus. Librarians are available to assist in person, by phone, instant messaging, text, and email through Ask a Librarian: www.library.umass.edu/ask/index.html. The Du Bois Library, open around the clock from 11 a.m. on Sundays to 9 p.m. on Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, is the location for materials in the social sciences and humanities. It also houses Special Collections and University Archives, and the Law, Government Documents, Maps, and East Asian Collections. The reserve reading collection, audio-visual reserve materials, and music listening facilities are also located in Du Bois Library, with the same opening hours. Materials in the sciences are located in the Science and Engineering Library on the second floor of the Lederle Graduate Research Center. The Music Reserve Lab, with listening facilities, is located in the Fine Arts Center and provides access to recordings, scores, books, and videos assigned for music classes. The Image Collection Library, in Bartlett Hall, provides digital images for faculty and student use. |
