Student Health Insurance Plan
Massachusetts requires full-time college students to have primary health insurance. The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst meets state requirements, with coverage and benefits specific to college students. Learn more at www.umass.edu/uhs/insurance or call UHS' Patient Services department, (413) 577-5192. Students taking five or more credits are automatically enrolled in the individual SHIP; charges appear on the semester’s tuition bill. Those enrolled in the SHIP individual plan are eligible to purchase a family plan, which provides coverage for spouses, same-sex domestic partners, and their dependent children under 19. To purchase the SHIP family plan, students should go to UHS Patient Services before the end of the Add/Drop period. Waivers: Depending on insurance coverage and student status, students may be eligible to waive the SHIP. For information, go to www.umass.edu/uhs/insurance. Eligible students wishing to waive the SHIP must complete the online waiver process by the end of the Add/Drop period to prevent enrollment and charges. Go to SPIRE, www.spire.umass.edu, select the Health Waiver page link, click the Online Waiver Site link and then complete and submit the waiver form. Waivers completed for the fall semester apply to the entire academic year; only new or transfer students with comparable coverage should complete the spring semester waiver. |
