Doctor of Audiology ProgramThe Au.D. degree program, which allows the student to meet the academic and clinical requirements for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology, is a four-year, full-time program. The first three years are in residence on campus, with students completing coursework, on- and off-campus clinical rotations, and a capstone research project. During the fourth year, students are placed in an intensive off-campus externship. The doctoral (Au.D.) education program in audiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850, 800-498-2071 or 301-296-5700. All students must complete 17 required core courses (51 credits), 1 departmental elective course (3 credits), 3 credits of non-departmental statistics coursework, and 6 credits of non-departmental electives. Students must also complete a 6 credit capstone research experience. During this heavily mentored experience students engage in the types of research activities they are most interested in and that best match their future career goals. Near the completion of their coursework, students are required to take and pass a written comprehensive exam. A dual Au.D./Ph.D. option is available for individuals who are interested in both clinical and research aspects of the field.
