How to Explore/Get Started in the MajorSuggested General Education CoursesUnder the new guidelines students are still required to take two courses, one in U.S. Diversity and one in Global Diversity. Students entering in Fall 2018 are expected to take one of these diversity courses, either U.S. or Global, in their first year on campus. For Fall 2018 Registration, look for courses with DU (formerly U) and DG (formerly G) to help students stay on track. Any course labled DU will satisfy the requirement for a U.S. diversity course and any course labeled DG will satisfy the the requirement for Global diversity course. Course planning guidelines, including guidelines for students, are available at www.umass.edu/gened. Students are strongly advised to take the appropriate foundation math courses as early as possible (see below) in order not to be delayed in declaring and making progress in the Psychology major. Most students use PSYCH 240 as their R2, since only ONE course from the major can also be counted as a Gen. Ed. * Since enrollment in PSYCH 240 is both limited and restricted to declared Psychology majors, students should declare the major as soon as possible and well prior to the semester in which they wish to enroll in PSYCH 240. How to Declare the MajorTo make good progress in the major and since most upper level Psychology courses generally are closed to non-majors until late in the registration period after freshmen have enrolled in classes, it is strongly recommended that students declare the major as early as possible and preferably by the beginning of sophomore year. Current students may declare the Psychology major at specific times each week throughout the semester. These times are posted in the Psychology Advising Center in Tobin 501 and on the Psychology website at http://umass.edu/pbs/undergraduate/declaring-psychology-major-or-minor. BEFORE they can declare the major, students must either be currently registered in a course that fulfills the R1 gen ed or have completed their R1 gen ed requirement. The R1 can be fulfilled by taking an appropriate course(s) or by passing the R1 exemption test. When choosing course(s) to complete the R1, students should note the Math prerequisite for PSYCH 240 as described above. To declare the major, students should bring a copy of their academic requirements report or unofficial transcript that shows the R1 requirement in progress or completed. Summary of Requirements for the MajorMinimum total # or range of credits required: 40 In addition to PSYCH 100, 240 and 241, students need to complete four Psychology Core courses, PSYCH 392A (Junior Year Writing), one advanced lab/seminar/small course, two Psychology electives and Psych 494RI (IE).
