Getting Started (Majors Guide)

School: PHHS

(Revised Spring 2018)

How to Explore / Get Started in the Major

Suggested General Education Courses

Under the new guidelines students are still required to take two courses, one in U.S. Diversity and one in Global Diversity. Students entering in Fall 2018 are expected to take one of these diversity courses, either U.S. or Global, in their first year on campus.  For Fall 2018 Registration, look for courses with DU (formerly U) and DG (formerly G) to help students stay on track.  Any course labled DU will satisfy the requirement for a U.S. diversity course and any course labeled DG will satisfy the the requirement for Global diversity course. Course planning guidelines, including guidelines for students, are available at www.umass.edu/gened.

Suggested Major and Pre-requisite Courses

  • NUTRITION 130
  • CHEM 111/112
  • NUTRITION 201 (Note: second semester freshman year or first semester sophomore year is the best time for this course)
  • BIOLOGY 151

Students must receive at least a passing grade in Nutrition 130, Nutrition 201 and Bio 151, and at least a C minus in Chem 111/112.  To officially enter the Dietetics track, students must earn at least a B in Nutrition 230 and have at least a 2.5 GPA based on coursework that includes BIOLOGY 151, CHEM 111, CHEM 112, CHEM 261 or CHEM 250 and KIN 270.

First-year students are required to attend group advising sessions during the pre-registration period.  Because of the complex, sequential nature of the courses and choice of options within the major, early consultation with an advisor is highly recommended.

How to Declare the Major

New first-year students may enter directly into the major. Students who want to transfer into the major from another major within UMass, including exploratory track students, should attend an info and advising session during the add/drop or pre-registration advising periods.  At other times during the semester, they should meet with a peer advisor to discuss the major and the Undergraduate Program Advisor to declare.  Students who are not ready to take Organic Chemistry as sophomores, or Biochemistry as juniors may need additional semesters or summer classes to complete requirements.;

As a Secondary Major: To declare nutrition as a second major, students should attend an info and advising session during the add/drop or pre-registration advising periods.  At other times during the semester, they should meet with a peer advisor to discuss the major and the Undergraduate Program Advisor to declare.

Transfer Students:

Transfers should carefully plan their coursework taken elsewhere so they have the prerequisites for sophomore- or junior-level Nutrition courses. Students transferring in as juniors need to have completed Chem 112-g and Biology 151- equivalent courses.  Students transferring in as sophomores need to have completed pre-requisites allowing them to enroll in Chem 111.  This means either having completed a Math 104-equivalent course or earning a sufficient score on the Math Placement Exam.

Summary of Requirements for the Major

Minimum total # of credits required: 61-65

Students may choose between three tracks: (1) Dietetics; (2) Nutrition and Health Sciences; and (3) Nutrition in a Global Society.

Course requirements and the typical course sequences by semester for each track are available on our website: http://www.umass.edu/sphhs/nutrition/undergraduate-program

Majors in all three tracks complete a core of science courses that include: Biology, General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Biochemistry, and Microbiology.  Majors in all three tracks also complete a basic core of courses that provides an understanding of: foods and their nutritional content; food selection and preparation; the physiological and biochemical processing and functioning of nutrients in the body; and the relationship between nutrition and health, including the effects of excessive, inadequate or unbalanced intake of nutrients. The Dietetics track is accredited with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and satisfies the Undergraduate curriculum requirements (DPD) for students who want to earn an R.D.
