Thatcher Language House
The Thatcher Language House offers the opportunity for freshmen through seniors to live in a residence hall dedicated to learning a target language and exploring foreign cultures. In this hall of approximately 100 students, you can choose to be part of one of the six Language Programs. Each of the language programs --Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish-- occupies a floor which includes its own lounge. Students meet there to socialize in the language, and regularly during the week for a specially-designed two credit course. An experienced graduate student from the Language Department teaches the course and organizes social and cultural activities. Students in the language programs agree to speak the language as often as possible. Some skill in the language and concurrent enrollment in an appropriate depatmental language course are prerequisites for acceptance to the Thatcher Language House.
