Academic Status

Good Standing

All university students, including Stockbridge students, must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or greater to remain in good academic standing.

Academic Discipline

Stockbridge students whose cumulative GPAs fall below 2.00 are subject to academic discipline as follows:

  • After one semester during which the cumulative GPA falls below 2.00, the student will be placed on Academic Probation. The student must meet with his/her academic advisor to discuss a plan to return to good academic standing.
  • If a student fails to attain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 for a second semester, he/she will be placed on Academic Suspension. A student placed on Academic Suspension may not enroll for the semester following the suspension, but may apply for readmission to re-enter the university after a one-semester absence. It is important to keep in mind that the suspension may place a student out of synch with sequential course requirements. Any student subject to suspension should therefore meet with the Stockbridge advisor to address the implications of the suspension (e.g., additional time needed to coomplete the degree, the desirability of taking courses at another institution while on suspension from the university, etc.).
  • A student will be subject to dismissal if he or she would be subject to suspension a second time. Dismissal is permanent separation from the school and the university.

Withdrawal (Voluntary and Administrative)

A student who wishes to voluntarily withdraw from school at any time must meet with the director. Students failing to meet their financial obligations to the university or the school, or who neglect to submit proper proof of immunization, will be administratively withdrawn. Notification of administrative withdrawal will be sent through SPIRE at spire.umass.edu. When financial or immunization obligations have been met, the student will be reinstated.

Appeal

Students have the right to appeal their academic status. Final authority for determining students' academic status resides with the Committee on Admissions and Records. Students are urged to consult with the Stockbridge Director to discuss extenuating circumstances, and to learn about petitions and appeals procedures.

Readmission after Withdrawal from a Baccalaureate Program

A student who has been suspended or dismissed from a baccalaureate degree program at the University and wishes to enter a Stockbridge School major is required to petition the Committee on Admissions and Records. Rationale should include a statement which clearly indicates a new direction in educational objectives and why success in a Stockbridge program is likely.
