Studying sociology is a good way to obtain a well-rounded, liberal arts education. Although the major does not provide vocational training, its courses offer good preparation for entry-level jobs or for graduate study. Students interested in social work at the individual or community level could profitably concentrate in coursework related to Social Service. Courses related to crime, law, and deviance provide good background for careers in various aspects of law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Coursework in sociology research methods and data analysis is useful preparation for careers in market research, opinion polling, and statistical analysis. Students considering a job in teaching, human resources, advocacy or those eager to foster social change will find relevant courses related to culture, organizations, and institutions, social inequality and diversity, and a multitude of other opportunities that offer an excellent introduction to American society and international issues. 

Each fall, the sociology department offers a Career Seminar to help Juniors and Seniors prepare for life after college. The department sponsors one interdisciplinary certificate in Criminal Justice. It also offers letters in Social Work/Social Welfare and Social Research Analysis. Participation in these programs is open to majors and non-majors alike.
